THE DUNG BEETLE: WORKING HARD AND HAVING A BALL. The dung beetle, or more euphoniously, the scarab beetle, is one of nature’s hardest working critters. With its ‘talent’ for collecting, rolling and burying dung, it plays a huge and invaluable role in agriculture. It’s estimated that in the US alone, the cattle industry saves $ 380 million each year thanks to the beetle’s waste management activities. The scarab beetle was also revered in ancient Egypt, where it was linked to the god Khepri, whose task it was to push the ball of the sun across the sky in daytime and through the underworld at night (though not with his hind legs, presumably). While we won’t collect your work and bury it underground, we share the work ethic and dogged determination of the beetle. And while we’re not worshipped by any Egyptians we know of, we’re sure you’ll appreciate the long hours we’ll spend on your business. |
